LATAM POLITICS TODAY-Mexico buys Iberdrola power plants in 'new nationalization'

The latest in Latin American politics today: Mexico snares Iberdrola power plants for $6 bln in 'new nationalization'

MADRID/MEXICO CITY - The Mexican government has agreed to buy 13 power plants from Spanish energy giant Iberdrola in a deal worth $6 billion, which Mexico's president hailed as a "new nationalization" of the electricity market. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called the accord historic and said it will give state-owned power company Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) majority control over the electricity market.

It comes as Mexico is entangled in a dispute over its energy policy with the U.S. and Canada, which argue that it prejudices their companies and violates a regional trade agreement. Peru's Congress votes against impeachment trial for president

LIMA - Peru's Congress rejected a motion from leftist lawmakers to launch impeachment hearings against President Dina Boluarte on charges tied to the deaths of protesters, the latest chapter in the country's political volatility. The final tally from Tuesday's vote saw 37 mostly leftist lawmakers vote in support of a motion to remove caretaker leader Boluarte for "moral incapacity," falling short of the 52 votes needed to advance the trial to potentially remove her in the 130-seat legislature.

More than 50 people have died in protests since the removal and arrest of Boluarte's predecessor, Pedro Castillo in December. Opposition parties have blamed those deaths on Boluarte. Mexico asks China for help on fentanyl, slams US critics

MEXICO CITY - Mexico's president said he had written to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, urging him to help control shipments of fentanyl as he fended off criticism in the U.S. that Mexico is not doing enough to stop trafficking of the synthetic opioid. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador read out the letter to Xi in which he defended efforts to curb supply of the deadly drug, while rounding on U.S. critics, some of whom want Washington to intervene militarily in Mexico

Top Mexico cartel member extradited to U.S. to face drug charges - Justice Dept WASHINGTON - A top member of Mexico's powerful Sinaloa drug cartel has been extradited to the United States and appeared in court in Washington to face international drug trafficking and firearms charges, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Jorge Ivan Gastelum Avila, also known as Cholo Ivan, is accused of being an assassin for the cartel, the department said in a statement. He was extradited on April 1 and appeared in court on April 3, it added. U.S. farming businesses want Biden to allow more investment in Cuba

HAVANA - U.S. agro-businesses said they were "losing" in their bid to boost commerce with Cuban farmers and called on the Biden administration to ease restrictions and allow investments in private agriculture on the island. Cuba lifted a ban on private companies in 2021, and last May U.S. President Joe Biden last May loosened restrictions on travel, remittances and migration, and promised the United States would do more to support Cuba's fledgling private sector.

Despite the loosening, a Cold War-era U.S. embargo on Cuba remains in place, prohibiting some trade and financing between the two countries and complicating investment ties.
